Many of Cook's greatest achievements are connected with his scientific approach. Even though he did not discover many of the places he went to, he found out more and recorded more than the explorers who made the discoveries. His navigation and mapmaking were superb.

Cook made many discoveries for England, for example on his first voyage he proved that New Zealand was not part of the great south continent.

Indeed later he proved that there was no great south continent.
